Observations et histoire de la classification de la description
In his 1837 edition, Drury classifies cynthia Herbst (referred to by Godart in 1819) as a synonym of his cynthius. Doubleday (1848) retains cynthia as a valid species, listing bonasia Fabricius as a synonym. Trimen classifies cynthia as a valid species in 1862. Aurivillius (1898) classifies cynthia as a synonym of the cynthius Drury aberration of bonasia Fabricius. It should be noted, however, that Herbst’s illustration bears much closer resemblance to oberthueri Butler than to a female bonasia. The synonymy of cynthia Herbst and cynthius Drury is confirmed by Eltringham (1912, 1916).
