Observations et histoire de la classification de la description
Classified as a species by Aurivillius (1898). Classified as a form of acara Hewitson (classified at the time as a subspecies of zetes Linnaeus) by Eltringham (1912–1916). van Son (1963) classifies barberi as a subspecies of zetes. This taxon is classified as a species by Woodhall (2005) and by Henning & Williams (2010).
